From its abstract roots in Cubism to the political and counter culture movements of Dada and Punk, collage has always been a product of its environment. With the rise of 24 hour media cycles, social networks and search engines, contemporary culture has effectively rendered print media obsolete, creating a virtual boom in discarded paper ephemera for collage artists to examine and reinvent. Through these discarded remnants collage artists have become the archivists and activists of this post modern age, paralleling the frenetic pace in which we live while exposing the voyeuristic and often disjointed nature of popular culture.

Gestalten Space – Cutters Egdes: Contemporary Collage

Posted in Art, Galleries, Media on April 20th, 2011

Gestalten specializes in exploring visual culture. With the latest step in their creative exploration, they have opened Gestalten Space – an expansive, multifaceted, 350 square-meter space located in the heart of Berlin, incorporating both shop and gallery to present exhibitions and a platform for exchange.

For their opening show, Gestalten Space presents ‘Cutters Edges’ – assembled by American artist and curator James Gallagher. Bringing together over 50 international artists and showcasing more than 160 works, ‘Cutters Edges’ illustrates the range and depth of inspiring work, celebrating a new heyday of contemporary collage.

Following the success of the Cutters exhibitions at Pool Gallery (Berlin), Cinders Gallery (New York) and the West Cork Arts Centre (County Cork, Ireland), ‘Cutters Edges: Contemporary Collage’ marks the fourth exhibition in the Cutters series curated by James Gallagher. My work has been featured in 3 of the 4 shows so far. I’ll have three new original works featured in this latest show.
